1. Think About What You Want to Do

With the Kingdom growing at such a fast rate, there are a huge number of opportunities for you. If you know what you want to do, it will be easier to find the job that is right for you. If you don’t know what you want to do, think about what are your favourite things to do in your free time, what do you find really easy that other people struggle with, what could you talk about non-stop for hours? Spending some time thinking about what you would really like to work on will help you to focus your job search and you will be better prepared to write your covering letter and answer questions in the job interview.

2. Build Your Online Profile

The first thing employers will do after looking at your CV is search for you online. Therefore it is important to have an online profile that presents you in the right way. LinkedIn is the best place in Saudi to start a professional profile. Setup a profile on LinkedIn and make sure your other social media profiles reflect you in the right way.

3. Upskill Yourself

The easiest way to boost your chances of getting a job is to learn skills that are high in demand but are in short supply in the area you want to work in. Research which skills are in demand and then use platforms such as EdX, Cousera, Daroob and LinkedIn to take courses for free or at a low cost.

4. Build Your Network

Use tools such as LinkedIn, attend events and reconnect with old friends to build your professional network. In Saudi a significant number of positions are filled through recommendations. Your network may help you find a great role and employers like hiring people with a large and useful network.

5. Work on Your CV

Your CV is a snapshot of your history. Don’t worry about adding every little detail but make sure you give enough information covering your education, past work experience, any skills / achievements and your interests. Make sure your CV is easy to read, up to date and check it for spelling and grammar mistakes. Most companies will review CVs in English. However if you are not sure, check with the company. Online you will find many free templates on preparing a CV. It might also be helpful to get your friends or family to check your CV.

6. Do Your Research

Before applying for a role, do your research on the role, the company and the industry. You will always be asked why you want to work for the company and why you are applying for that role so make sure you are clear on these points.

7. Personalise Your Covering Letter

A covering letter is your introduction to the employer and why they should consider your application. Always personalise your covering letter for the specific job role and the specific company. Use the covering letter to explain why you want to work at the company and what makes you stand out from other applicants. Have a look online for good examples of covering letters.

8. Practise Interview Skills

If you get to the interview stage, this means that the company is seriously considering you and wants to make sure you are the right fit for the company. Listen to the questions asked and take care to answer them clearly. Prepare some examples of how you stand out from others and bring these out in your responses. At the end of the interview, always take the opportunity to ask questions as this demonstrates that you are interested in the company.

A big part of the interview will assess your body language and how you present yourself. Always smile and show enthusiasm for the job role. You can also practise mock interviews with your friends and family and ask them for feedback on how you present yourself and answer questions.

9. Ask for Feedback

If you are not successful in getting the job, always politely ask for feedback. Whilst not all companies will be able to provide feedback, if they do give you feedback, you can use this to improve future job applications.

MyMal Hero’s View

The key to getting the job that you want is preparation. Spend time thinking about what you want to do, prepare your online profile, work on your CV, practice interviews and research why you want to work for a particular company or job role. The more you prepare, the better you are likely to perform when you apply or a job. Good luck!
